How Plank Flooring is Packaged and Sold

Hardwood, bamboo, engineered timber, and Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT/LVP) are sold in standardized carton boxes. You cannot buy a fraction of a box. The calculation follows:

  • Net Floor Area = Room Length × Room Width
  • Gross Area = Net Floor Area × (1 + Wastage Percentage)
  • Carton Boxes to Order = Gross Area ÷ Coverage Per Box (Rounded Up to Whole Box)

Recommended Wastage Allowance by Pattern

Plank Layout Pattern Recommended Wastage Skill Level Required
Straight Parallel Run (Staggered Seams) 8% to 10% Beginner DIY Friendly
Diagonal (45-degree angle to walls) 15% Intermediate (Extensive wall cuts)
Herringbone or Chevron Parquet 18% to 20% Experienced Master Carpenter

The Crucial Perimeter Expansion Gap

Natural wood and high-density fiberboard (HDF) expand and contract with seasonal ambient humidity shifts. If installed tightly against drywall, the floor will buckle, cup, or tent upwards within 12 months.

Installer Rule: Always insert 1/4-inch to 3/8-inch (6 to 10 mm) spacers along every wall, doorway jamb, and pillar. This expansion gap is completely hidden once baseboards and shoe moulding (quarter-round) are attached to the walls.
